Every part of a yard does not dry at the same rate. Full-sun areas may need more water than shaded turf, while areas beneath trees may have competing roots that change how water moves through the soil. If one zone includes both sun and shade, it may be difficult to choose a run time that works well for everything.

Uneven coverage can cause you to run the system longer to compensate for dry spots, which may overwater other parts of the lawn. Cleaning or replacing nozzles and correcting sprinkler-head alignment can often improve coverage.
